Unit 3: Social Protocols & Telephone Etiquette
Mastering the gateway to Oromo society through greetings and digital interactions.
Communicative Social Logic
Establish social authority through the correct use of time-sensitive greetings and identity markers.
The Telephone Protocol (Haasawa Telefonaa)
A standard interaction follows this specific sequence:
- Greeting: Akkam bulte! (Good morning!)
- Inquiry: Bilisaan mana jiraa? (Is Bilisa home?)
- Negative/Positive State: Lakkii, inni mana hinjiru. (No, he is not home.)
- Message Exchange: Dhaamsa qabdaa? (Do you have a message?)
Formal Pronoun Nuances
Use Isin instead of Ati when addressing elders or groups to show respect. Failing to do so is considered a breach of Adaba (discipline).
