Unit 2: Morphophonemic Rules & Syllables

Technical Morphophonology

When certain sounds meet in Afaan Oromoo, they undergo mandatory transformations known as assimilation rules.

Core Assimilation Rules

  1. s + na: Optionally changes to -jjna. Example: ajjees + na -> ajjeejna (we kill).
  2. l/r + ni: The following 'n' is assimilated. Example: baal + ni -> bdalli (leaf). jir + na -> j{rra (we live).
  3. k/q/g + ta: The first consonant assimilates to the following. Example: beek + ta -> beetta (you know).

Syllable Structural Archetypes

Every Oromo syllable must conform to one of four specific patterns (where V is vowel, C is consonant):

  • CV: la-ma (two)
  • CVV: naan-noo (region)
  • CVC: af-ur (four)
  • CVVC: sad-deet (eight)

Important: No syllable in Oromo truly starts with a vowel; a silent glottal stop is always present at the beginning of vowel-initial words.
